A mellow and minor release

The versions of "Stuck Between Stations" and "First Night" (both great songs) are the same as from "Boys and Girls in America." The acoustic cover of "Stuck Between Stations" works fine, but acoustic versions are already available in the "Live at Fingerprints" EP and various "Live at the Current" mp3s floating around on the internet. That leaves "Against the Wind," with Craig Finn covering Bob Seger. The version is pretty mild, but after their recent turn playing with Springsteen, it's fun to hear them cover a throwback legend like Bob Seger. This EP probably works best as an introduction for new listeners to test out the band at its most mellow and accessible.

Ummm, it's awesome but...

Half the EP's from their sophomore 'Boys & Girls In America', (which IS a great record) another quarter of it is an acoustic version of one of those songs which isn't VASTLY different from the original and the final quarter's a cover... Buy tracks two and four, then go buy 'Boys & Girls In America'. Then, once you've digested that lot, go see them live - they're absolutely one of the best live bands out there right now. Oh and by the way Mr. 'This is not what I'd expect from them' - are you deaf? This is exactly what they've done before. Please think before you review someone you've actually heard more of than one radio single. xx

The Hold Steady...Hold Steady

It's not a major departure from their latest stuff, but The Hold Steady are original enough that the music is still fun to listen to. I look forward to the new album after this delectable little EP.

Recording mostly live, the band released its debut, Almost Killed Me, on Frenchkiss Records in March 2004. Dave Gardener (Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like...
