iTunes Review
Britain's Clientele began quietly releasing singles for a variety of independent labels in the late '90s. Well into the new century, the band's retro-based sounds were never too precious to not breathe. The atmospheres build to great effect, as the band employs a variety of techniques from heavy reverb to backward-recorded guitars that accentuate their sterling pop influences. While Nick Drake, early Marianne Faithfull, the early Bee Gees, Love, The Byrds, and The Beach Boys heavily influence their approach, The Clientele still serve up distinctly original sounds that make songs like "Reflections After Jane," "I Had To Say This," and "Monday's Rain" rewarding treasures. These are songs that grow on you over time. Suburban Light collects the group's early singles, plus several previously unreleased tracks. Along with the A Fading Summer EP, the U.S. edition of Suburban Light is a strong look at one of the most underrated bands of the late '90s and '00s.
Customer Reviews
Borat-approved
I partied with these guys in Little Rock. Not only does their music throw you back with warmth in your heart, the chicks they travel with are outrageous.
We Could Walk Together
The Clientele nailed it here, folks. Strange Geometry is a better quality recording, but this album features better songs. If you're moody, prone to bouts of melancholy, and/or English, this album will floor you. Download it, pour a drink, and get ready to weep.
beautiful..
this first full lenght album like the ones to follow is just simply hauntingly beautiful. perfect music for a rainy day when you just want to lock yourself in and look out the window.
