iTunes Review

Texan singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe shares the same dusky vocal tones as Amber Webber of Black Mountain/Lightning Dust, with a delivery wavering between hushed melancholy and a vigorous, nimble falsetto. Following her excellent debut EP (Even Born Again, 2008), Suburban Nature is an impressive and quietly exhilarating full-length effort, showing a surprisingly mature musician with an affinity for understatement and simplicity. (Now in her early twenties, Jaffe wrote many of these tunes as a teenager.) Tracks like “Wreaking Havoc” or “Before You Go” could have been overdressed in strings or pianos, but Jaffe keeps it simple, with her acoustic guitar up front and center, playing support to her smart lyrics and heart wrenching vocals. Cellos are bowed ever so faintly; violins are gently strummed and plucked, drums stripped down to their critical essence. She chases notes like a fluttering starling on “Better Than Nothing,” coos a pop lullaby on “Vulnerable,” and works up a folky troubadour froth on “Clementine.” “Pretender” is an eerily beautiful song, one of many memorable moments here.

Natural Born Song Writer...

Whether she's breaking your heart with her versus, or lifting you to soaring heights with her choruses, Sarah Jaffe makes transcribing the human experience into song a delicate art form. She is a true master of the medium and breathes new life into the term "natural talent." Suburban Nature is a collection of her finest work to date and truly showcases the ease at which she can write an emotionally gripping masterpiece. Between Sarah's writing, and John Congleton's producing, we get one of the most beautiful double edged swords ever crafted. This will surely be one of the albums of the year.

dream with this

I was told today to sit down and describe something beautiful - all that came to mind was sarah jaffe and this album..

I would expect nothing less from Sarah

I have been a fan of Sarah's since late 2006 / early 2007 when I saw her perform an acoustic cover night of Ryan Adams material at Club Dada in Dallas.

I was instantly hooked by her sweet sweet voice. Everything that I have of hers (Even Born Again - EP, Vulnerable - Single, Stay With Me - Single, and some stuff I got from SNOCAP that I hope she releases someday) has such emotion, musicality, and lyrical insight and truth...AMAZING!!!

Suburban Nature is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! I can't stop playing it!!!

I was lucky enough to see her in Houston at Warehouse Live last year and can't wait to see open for Norah Jones at Verizon Wireless in Houston on May 5, 2010....counting down the days!!! In fact, Sarah is the reason I am going.

THANKS SARAH for being you and doing what you do!!!

Biography

Born: 1986 in Texas

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '00s, '10s

On the title track of her debut EP, Sara Jaffe sang "I'm testament to old and new," which served as a nice introduction to the singer/songwriter's timeworn folk. Her tart, at times bluesy voice had the sepia tint of dustbowl troubadours of yore and the sad crack and throb of a ‘70s confessional folkie. Delicate guitar picking and literate lyrics rounded out the aesthetic, but Jaffe also proved to be capable...
