Aged...like fine wine
by johnwedeSo pleased to see that Jimmy has moved on to reinterpret the works of so many wonderful artists. Cover versions have always been his strength.
With this, his latest album, he brings new depth and meaning to old classics. There are a few clunkers mixed in with glorious recreations of old chestnuts...but that has always been the way with Jimmy Somerville albums.
The man is a genius with the way he makes an old, ragged Blondie cover a completly new song with hidden depths.
Whilst still loving his earlier, dance albums, I have grown older, as has Jimmy, and can appreciate that he has moved on to songs of a slower pace with more meaning to the lyrics, rather than the beat.
My only regret is that I can not purchase a physical version of this album.
Brilliant on so many levels.
naked goodness
by zeta-jI've been listening to Jimmy for years. I bought Age of Consent when it first was released and wore it out. Since then I've followed his career, be it movies, or music. Any one can sing to a dance beat. But strip music down to its core and you'll find out who really can sing. I find this album refreshing, honest and a direct point of where Mr. Somerville is in his life. Maybe I can relate to it because I grew up with most of these songs and love it when someone can take a song so familiar and recreate it. Blondies "Hanging on the Telephone" has never sounded more fragile, The Doors "People are Strange," still spooky but hauntingly beautiful and a little playful. It's Love and Hush are a joy to listen to. Hearing these songs by a man and not changing the sex while recording them with little or no filtering is what truly makes them what they are. A great collection. Does he hit the mark every time? No, but no one is perfect. As far as listening ability, yes. From begining to end this is a joy to listen to, and to get an up close and personal glimpse of a man who truly enjoys what he does, only makes you wish you were in the room when he sang them. Or you were the one he is singing them to. Now if he would only tour in the US then we all would have that luxury.
The worst of the worst
by Darkentries925Jimmy, unlike his old flame of Marc Almond is showing himself to never materialize. I have wasted 10 dollars on a CD that if it was in a bargain bin I would think about before buying. The songs have no air, excitement, or direction. The dance CDs of Bronski Beat, Communards at least showed a depth. This is him ONLY in falseto and hating life. Hate this album so much, I have never reviewed usic on itunes before
