Album Review
The AC/DC of trashy stoner rap, Devin the Dude had released a fat set of like-minded and like-sounding albums by the time he got to this 2010 release, but just like those metal gods, Devin’s redundancy is the reason fans keep coming back. They won’t be disappointed by Suite #420, which features the usual set of chilled-out weed anthems, sex jokes, and old-school R&B beats, along with those great oddball numbers the Dude uses to break each album up. Here it’s the new wave-flavored, heartbreak song “Where Ya At?” along with the crooked and appropriately titled “Funky Little Freestyle,” where Devin offers “I baffle the minds of workers at the Laundromat/They think my clothes have been worn by a walking ganja plant”. Best of the standard joints is “Still Comin’,” where producer Mirawge gives Devin a crip-walking beat over which he proves he’s still “got it” when it comes to out-sleazing the competition (including a “peach fuzz” reference that makes the phrase incorrigible). That’s what you pay for and that’s what you get in abundance, and without any guest shots from other artists. As the Dude would say, Suite #420 got it all rolled up, and you just gotta put a light on it.
Customer Reviews
thank god for devin.
At last, your favorite rapper's favorite rapper drops another dope album. Devin is truly the last of a dying breed. Keep it real my friend, and do what you wanna do. Much love.
Nice...
Typical levels of quality from Devin The Dude. But this one is at a masterful level. He delves deeper into his raps, yes. But he explores R&B more on "I Can't Handle It", and even delves into Blues on "Where Ya At". This is easily the most creative artist in the South (maybe even one of the most in music). This album displays his own brand of Southern Funk and Soul. Kudos go to his production team. They are underrated and never celebrated. Houston is right there with any other top-tier city in terms of music production. This is a much more focused and mature album. It's cohesive and the theme unfolds throughout the album. It's a grown-up album with smoky crooner sensibilities. It's only going to be labeled solely hip-hop by default. It deserves no label and a lane of it's own. I'll label it his most polished experiment to date. One that cements his legenadary status. NO ONE continues to wow at this level or stage of their career at this time. His humble demeanor and cool approach deserves all accolades and praises too. Typically his albums tend to lose focus towards the end. But not this one ("Funky Lil' Freestyle" proves it). Buy it! One of his best if not the best. It's worth every dime to support those who deserve it.
Keeping it real
Devin the Dude... one of the very few rappers that has kept his style through the years, and hasn't gone mainstream like so many others have. Great album!
