iTunes Review

From clean-edged guitar romps to expansive cinematic pieces, Mark Knopfler has explored an exceptionally wide swath of creative terrain. Private Investigations brings coherence to his forays into rock, blues, folk and symphonic modes. It would’ve been easy for this collection to linger on his early Dire Straits releases – certainly the run from the irresistible “Sultans of Swing” to the era-defining “Money for Nothing” could yield over a dozen worthy tracks. Instead, it detours into Knopfler’s film soundtrack contributions (“Going Home,” “The Long Road”) to help provide a bridge into his ‘90s solo output. The rootsy “Why Aye Man” and the wry “Boom, Like That” give evidence to the singer/ guitarist’s continued 21st-century relevance. Private Investigations serves as a fine survey of Knopfler’s growth as a songwriter, capturing his insinuating wit and bedrock compassion. But it may be best enjoyed as a showcase for his protean guitar skills, at once tradition-based and sleekly modern in sound. Track for track, this is the best summation of his catalog available.

The Works!

by Shann3000

I love every single song on this album, except emmylou harris' voice... besides that I don't see how "What it is" isn't like one of his top songs, because it's so amazingly perfect to listen to at any time. DS IS DA BEST!

For the best of these songs live, look for "Alchemy" on vinyl or cd

If you love Dire Straits, you owe it to yourself to hear what they were like live and Alchemy is among the best just put it in and let it play recordings ever, Like "Live at Leeds" which absolutely captured a Who show, this fantastic recording is a must have.

Biography

Formed: 1977 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy....
