And The Critics Say...
"So bear in mind that this is the band that took your breath away with the opening track of Emo Diaries 2 and the fact that it's on Deep Elm, and by now you should have figured out that it is awesome. This is probably my favourite record in the Deep Elm catalogue, and that is like the ultimate compliment I could give any band. Trust me, this is just beautiful. POP UNKNOWN play music that just flows from the speakers, each tender note is to be savoured and every word to be embraced. They take the simple and melancholic emotion of MINERAL and blend it with those moments of pure emo pop bliss that make you swoon over the Promise Ring. POP UNKNOWN play music that makes you glad your parents brought you into this world. Look, don't just take my word for it, go check these guys out and see for yourself how right I am. And twenty two minutes is never enough - thank god for repeat play on CD decks." - Fracture "Clever in concept, seductive by virtue of its struggle with vulnerability, and absolutely great pop music." - Detroit Metro Times "The five-song debut EP SUMMER SEASON KILLS from Austin's POP UNKNOWN is a fully realized musical work, a minor masterpiece. From singer Tim Lasater's co-dependent mantra on the opening song "Follow You" to the heartbreaking refrain of the closer "Tipping the Scale" you can almost musically trace the birth and death of an intimate relationship. Not surprising, considering that Pop Unknown's lineup includes ex-members of Austin favorite Feed Lucy and the influential emo-core band Mineral. "Follow You" takes things nice and easy a la Red Stars Theory, dripping chiming guitar lines like so many teardrops. Pulsing keyboards give way to a power chord workout that conveys passion without going over the top. Whisper-to-a-scream dynamics and a lingering outro to remind us how hard it really is to say goodbye. Fortunately for the listener, you can always hit the repeat button. SUMMER SEASON KILLS shows a band ready to take the world by storm, with the musical guts and know-how to pull it off. Look for a full length coming out hopefully in 1999." - Consumable "For those in need of something that can both rock and make you go weak at the knees..." - Collective "Sometimes solemn, sometimes sizzling, Summer Season Kills is an all-too-brief glimpse into the heart of Pop Unknown. In just five songs, the band projects an intimacy that makes you feel like you're sitting on the floor experiencing I a cozy, coffeehouse performance, nodding your head in "I've been there" agreement with the band's diary-honest lyrics. One prevailing experience lurks beneath and informs Pop Unknown's soft melodies and chiming guitars - the painful parting of ways with a loved one. This Texas quartet has created a sweet, emo-studded rock EP that evokes a Codependent's Anonymous meeting; the band wants you to know that there are others who share your clingy feelings. Summer Season Kills may not inspire you to let go during your next dysfunctional relationship, but it'll help you cope and give you strength to get out of bed on those despairing mornings." - CMJ "As disparate as they may seem, the members of Pop Unknown have managed to gel in ways few bands have - and with being together for only a few months. On vocals, Lasater sounds like Stephen Malkamus minus a few degrees of cutesiness, and the rest of the band has an equal Pavement sound to it. But with three guitars and the occasional keyboard part, things are a little more orchestrated, a little edgier, a little more punk." - Austin American Statesman
i can't believe no one's written anything...
so the only song i own on this EP is 'This Guy's Ready for Bed' but it alone can earn the entire work a 5-star rating.
