Intimate and emotional
It's WONDERFUL to hear a new recording of "Sunday In The Park With George"! The orchestral reduction is masterfully handled and lends an immediate intimacy without sacrificing any grand, dramamtic sweep. Best of all, I really enjoy hearing George and Dot being sung without the original cast's vocal strain (Peters) and hamminess (Patinkin). Heresey, I know and I saw the original production and loved it but what makes "Sunday" a great and important piece of musical theater is Sondheim's score and not individual performances. What did Shakespeare say - "The play's the thing", right?
Saw the show tonight, brilliant! Get this recording
Just came back from the Roundabout's production of the show with its two leads (on this recording) Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell. Wow! They were perfect in their respective roles of Georges and Dot. What this production has that the OBC didn't is heart. I teared up a number of times from the passion and the creativity of Sondheim, the actors, the directors and (so powerfully) the scenic design. It's the most impressive and creative use of computer technology I've ever seen in the theatre. Too bad we can't see that on the CD. Are there flaws? Yes, the second act has never really felt as organic as the first act, but they came damn close tonight, it was moving and compelling - Move On is brilliantly performed. This is an underrated classic that deserves to be heard.
Must Buy if you love Sondheim, but steep price...
The ONLY reason I would tell someone not to buy this album would be its pricetag. I could stomach $15, and at $10 I would slap anyone who didn't buy it. I love this album beyond belief. I saw this show after it had transferred to the Wyndham theatre in London, and it absolutely blew me away. This recording captures the raw emotion of the cast like no other. Maybe it helps that I saw it, but who knows. Jenna Russell and Daniel Evans pull killer performances in this cast recording, and I hopefully (money permitting) will be able to see their encore on Broadway, previews starting January 25th. Please, give this recording a chance, and remember, not EVERYONE has to immitate Bernadette Peters and Mandy Pattikin. Open your mind and realize that people actually CAN play characters differently. Good luck! :)
