iTunes Review

With his 1974 release, Sundown, Gordon Lightfoot cemented his status as both a Canadian folk music icon and a commercial powerhouse. “Carefree Highway” and the title track were the immediate hits and have since become FM radio standards. But the rest of Lightfoot’s work is similarly informed with comfortable arrangements of pristine acoustic guitars backed with a quiet, tight rhythm section, all of which serve to support one of the most distinctive voices in popular music. His easeful tone can be deceiving. There is still human struggle, pangs of regret and love forever lost in even his smoothest tunes. Sundown remains one of the man’s most definitive albums. The swirling acoustic guitars and flutes accompanying “Circle of Steel” create a most evocative bucolic setting. “Too Late For Prayin’” hides an urgency behind its laidback, string-laced gait. “Is There Anyone Home” has a long, lonesome sound that’s not quite country music but similar in its nostalgic tone for better times and places. The man makes it sound easy even when it clearly isn’t.

Possible Answer To Remixed "High And Dry"

by jjberry

I agree 100% that the original "High and Dry" was better than the re-mastered version b/c the original includes Kathryn Smith's
exquisite backing vocals. The only reason I can think of her vocals being left off the re-mastered version is that she is the same
Katherine Smith that served 18 months in prison for her role in John Belushi's death. Just a theory. But, wow, she really added
a lot to some of Gordon Lightfoot's songs.

GREAT album - one song NOT original version.

One of the truly great albums of the era. Every song a stunner. Best overall disc that Gordon has produced. ONE COMPLAINT: for some mysterious reason cut #2, HIGH AND DRY, is NOT the original version, but clearly re-recorded later, and not very well. The vocals are sloppier, and buried in the mix. Bummer, as that's one of my fav cuts on the record. WHY???? Who knows? The rest of it is swanky, though.
