iTunes Review
With Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, David Lowery has exemplified the thinking man’s rocker without losing the “rocker” part. Guitarist Johnny Hickman ensures Cracker never turn soft with his no-holds-barred guitar chords and striking leads, Lowery never loses his wit, and the friendly competition between the two has made Cracker one of alternative rock’s most engaging bands. Sunrise is jam-packed with memorable hooks and smart, sarcastic songwriting. “Yalla Yalla (Let’s Go)” and “Show Me How This Thing Works” establishes their aggressive side with the sweeter stoner ballad “Turn On Tune In Drop Out With Me” taking a standard chord progression and melody and making it fresh with Lowery’s enthusiasm. “Hand Me My Inhaler” rejuvenates punk rock. “Friends” with Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood explores country. Cracker occupies an interesting alternative crossroads, neither too weird nor too pop to fit comfortably with the crowd. Even special guests John Doe, Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz and the aforementioned Hood don’t up the group’s profile. Just more good friends stopping by for a good tune.
Customer Reviews
wow
This has just become my favorite Cracker album. They do everything right. Fun, interesting, and great rock and roll. Recording is awesome. I keep jumping fro mtrack to track, declaring it myt favorite, Can remember the last time that happened to me with an album. Every song is strong.
Johnny Hickman
may be the most underrated guitarist of this era.
No longer will I say "Remember that band from the 90s?"
Because now they are the band in the 00's! This album is first track to last, awesome. Catchy beats, and relatable lyrics; no song is more fitting for today than "Turn On Tune In Drop Out With Me."
