Album Review

There are two kinds of Zephyr fans; those who think the band died when Tommy Bolin left, and those who know it didn't. This second and final album for Warner featured Boulder, CO, guitar slinger Jock Bartley in place of Tommy Bolin, the replacement of Bobby Berge and John Faris, and one of the few known recorded appearances of Bobby Notkoff, other than his work with Neil Young, for whom he created the heart-wrenching violin break on "Running Dry." Without Bolin, the band took a decided turn toward jazz. This is a stunning album, featuring unknown classics like "Moving Too Fast," "Chasing Clouds," and "Winter Always Finds Me." Lead singer Candy Givens passed away some years ago, and this album is perhaps her most passionate legacy. Reissued on CD by the One Way label in 2000.

Back Story

When Tommy Bolin left Zephyr, Candy and I took it as an opportunity to renew ourselves. We invited three guys from a good local cover band, The Children, to join us: Jock Bartley, guitar; Michael Wooten, drums; Danny Smyth, keys. They had never done any recording or touring but they knew how to play together - something our former band had forgotten. We worked nearly every day for four months working out the songs for Sunset Ride. I wrote and arranged the majority of the material, but with plenty of input from the others. Our rehearsal hall was an old milking barn Candy and I converted into a studio during the last days of the first Zephyr. It was on a small sod farm a few miles east of Boulder and had a great view of the mountains, especially at sunset. We used to break, smoke something, and then go out and play major frisbee out on the acres of fresh grass while watching the uniquely beautiful Colorado sunsets and then go back for more music after the color faded. Candy wrote Sunset Ride and Sierra Cowgirl, my personal favorites on the album. Danny wrote the changes for Chasing Clouds, Jock wrote the guitar riff for the vocal section of Winter Always Finds Me, Billy Ed Wheeler wrote High Flying Bird, and I wrote the rest. Everybody created their own parts as a cooperative and collaborative effort within the arrangements. The idea was to create tight songs with just enough space for the musicians to roam from time to time. We recorded the basic tracks in Denver at Summit Studio on an Ampex eight track and then took them to New York and transferred them to sixteen track format for adding vocals and sweetening. We worked at Gotham Studio with an excellent English engineer by the name of Malcolm Addey. Candy, Malcolm, and I did the mixing. The album is designed to be listened to in order, starting with I Am Not Surprised - sort of a first Zephyr type of tune and then expanding to include other elements until you end up with Candy's impressionist Sunset Ride and then the free jazz intro to Winter Always Finds Me. Candy and I wanted to make a record that covered a lot of ground and looking back at our work after 38 years, I'm saying we did OK. One of these days I'm going to release the alternative versions of many of these tunes that Candy and I made a few years later that exist as masters only. Thanks to all of you who have taken our music into your lives.

Just the way I remember them. This is one of the best mixes of blues/southern rock/pop albums ever! The re-master is a little heavy on the bass, but so what. I had a chance to see Zephyr in concert while attending school at in Colorado during what was know as ‘Spring Fest’. Candy Givens was hot then and hearing her again brings back great memories of her playing on a flat bed trailer at a windy cow pasture in Gunnison Colorado (cir. mid ‘70s). My only copy of this album was a cassette recording of scratched plastic. With this download I feel like I’ve ‘Gone Back to Colorado’.

My favorite CD of all Time!

I am a huge fan of the album. This was meant to be listened to all the way through one side and then the other. The songs are excellent but the album shines in a mood invoking trance. Candy Givens could blow harp better than almost any guy.This is Jock Bartley's "Layla". He had big shoes to fill and Did! Candy was linked to Janis Joplin and it wasn't a good comparison,other than Candy could be outrageous. Jock wrote two of my favorite love songs and sings them with Candy,"Sold My Heart" and "No Time Lonesome". For the guitar players out there this has some great riffing and the backwards tape solo is worth the album. This is the Best,"I'm not Surprised"! By the way, the cover won a Grammy!

This late-'60s Denver group is most notable as the starting point for guitarist Tommy Bolin, who was still in his teens when they recorded their first album in 1969. A rather routine slab of bluesy, heavy rock, it made the Top 50. Aside from Bolin's extended hard rock riffing, it prominently featured the lead vocals of Candy Givens, who affected a blues-wailing pose along the lines of Janis Joplin. But she didn't have the full throat or guts to back it up, ending up closer to also-ran female psychedelic...
