iTunes Review
Scottish folksinger Donovan Leitch had first emerged as a lighter-weight Bob Dylan, complete with harmonica rack and songs that shifted between vague protest and poetic symbolism. However, Donovan hooked up with producer Mickie Most and together the two sculpted a gorgeous psychedelic pop that emphasized and reflected the hippy-trippy sentiments to which the young songwriter was unquestionably drawn. In an era of the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and the Beatles’ Revolver, 1966’s Sunshine Superman sounds perfectly in step, a mix of progressive sounds and ancient sounding folk hymns (“Guinevere,” “Three King Fishers”). The title track chugs with a swooping, descending riff. “Season of the Witch” turns two chords into an eerie warning statement. “Bert’s Blues” tips its hat to Scottish folk guitarist extraordinaire Bert Jansch. “The Fat Angel” nods towards the Mamas and Papas’ Mama Cass. But most affecting is Donovan’s tribute to his future wife, “Legend of a Girl Child Linda,” a mystical folk lullaby that features one of his most gorgeous melodies.

Donovan's Best Album
Let me declare from the get-go that I am a huge admirer of Donovan. However, it hasn't spared me from recognizing that many of his studio albums were spotty at best. At times his poetry can be unimaginably trite and frankly embarassing (have you heard "I Love My Shirt"?) But this album is amazing. This is his Sgt Pepper. Obviously he was dabbling with psychedelics ("The Trip")and he was at the height of fame. All of which makes for a heady brew. But this is the album where he blended his trademark mystic-folk with enough jangle and fuzz to make a tough mixture that holds up long after the hippie fad moved to a commune in Vermont to raise llamas. His voice is delicate and fey, but the production is acidic. Rumor has it that Jimmy Page plays guitar on a lot of this record. The album is also loaded with Indian instrumentation. The tempos are always on the slow side which allows Donovan to bring a sultry, seductive quality out in his voice. I don't think any record he made was quite as deep, quite as sullen or quite as narcotic as this one. And this dark underbelly makes the perfect complement to his otherwise (overly) sunny disposition. A CLASSIC!!
"Sunshine Superman" is a great album
I've loved this album since I was 16 years old. Love at first listen, just as with the Beatles, Dylan's 2nd album (remember when the needle was first let down on "Blowin' in the Wind"?), and others. Beautiful, trippy, sunny, shimmering, sparkling, reboant, phantastic. If you like the Incredible String Band, Dylan, Bert Jansch, Fairport Convention, Mamas and Papas, The Byrds, etc., you'll like this.
Groovy
This album is really groovy. It's definatly Donovan's best, one of the best of 1966, and the sixties. Anyone with any taste in music would like this album, I like it and I'm only 13.
