iTunes Review

Black Market Clash was originally a 10” EP released in between London Calling and Sandinista. This expanded 1993 edition betters the original by bringing together almost every crucial b-side from the band’s 1977-1982 heyday. More than any of their studio albums, Super Black Market Clash captures the quartet’s trajectory, as they moved beyond the parameters of punk and explored their passion for reggae, soul, and hip-hop. While the snarling “1977” is as emblematic of early punk as “White Riot” or “I’m So Bored With the U.S.A.,” the Clash really set themselves apart with covers of “Time Is Tight” (Booker T. and the MG’s) and “Pressure Drop” (Toots and the Maytals). They reformatted these classics with their own ingenious arrangements, thereby proving that they could absorb their influences without sacrificing their own style. Super Black Market Clash is buoyed by several of Mick Jones’ finest pure pop songs (“1-2 Crush On You,” “Gates of the West,” “The Prisoner”), but the second half of the collection shows the band at its boldest, delving into their own dark and deeply groovy excursions into dub and rap rhythms.

Customer Reviews

find the vinyl

This expanded version of the original Black Market Clash EP has a lot of marginal material on it, and inexplicably omits one of the best tracks from the original version, Armagideon Time, as well as editing Bankrobber Dub/Robber Dub. The original track listing includes Capitol Radio One, Prisoner, Pressure Drop, Cheat, City of the Dead, Time is Tight, Bankrobber Dub/Robber Dub, Armagideon Time, and Justice Tonight/Kick it Over. My daddy was a bankrobber, and he says "Do yourselves a favor and seek this out on vinyl."

Correction on Armegideon Time

Armegideon time is on the album under the title Justice Tonight/kick it over.

great mix of covers, instrumentals, and remixes

The clash is a great band. This is a must buy for anyone looking for a deeper addition to their collection. Reggae covers like "Pressure Drop", "Justice Tonight" are a treat, as are the funky bass lines heard in instrumentals like "The Magnificent Dance" and "Mustapha Dance".

Biography

Formed: 1976 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s

The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihilistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous, expanding its hard rock & roll with reggae, dub, and rockabilly among other roots musics. Furthermore, they were blessed with two exceptional songwriters in Joe Strummer and Mick Jones,...
