iTunes Review

Making the jump to a major label, New Jersey's Monster Magnet ramped up its fidelity and evolved from a scuzzy fuzz-rock group into a powerful stoner rock band. Here, its debts to Hawkwind, Black Sabbath, and The Stooges are repaid with songs that take those influences and transform them into pure anthems. The band's sense of mischief can be heard in the humorous song titles and lyrics. The cover of Willie Dixon's blues classic "Evil" (best known in a version by Howlin' Wolf) is pure brutal funk and boogie. The cover of Hawkwind's "Brainstorm" is even more severe, breaking the eight-minute mark with the feel of a crossfire hurricane. New guitarist Ed Mundell slightly alters the sound away from psychedelia into old-school heavy metal. "Cyclops Revolution" adds stirring guitar solos and forceful riffs. The title track rumbles with an early-'70s groove. "Cage Around the Sun" works from acoustics to an anthemic blast. Leader Dave Wyndorf is a true visionary who understands the importance and power of simple, elemental riffs. He's among the most important creators of stoner/space rock.

I'm the only closet-metalhead in the house?

A great album. Production is more polished than Spine of God. SuperJudge is not necessarily the better of the two albums. They still use ol' school tube amplifiers, many cosmic and supernatural references ala Hawkwind (Lemmy Kilmister's band before Motorhead), but the songs are tight, well-written, and dare I say catchy and rich. A great stop-start-heavy-on-the-breakdowns cover of Evil (Is Going On), an ol' blues song. This album is a good choice for people who still like metal but would assume forget glam.

the brick for your mortor

The Monster Magnet album of choice. Let this album be the psychodelic mind melt for your rock n roll psychosis. When you get to a mellow high kick this one into volume 10 and ride the sonic wave.Honestly, I have had to replace this album from my collection many times 'cuase my friends "borrow" it all the time. Be a good friend and get your own.

Then I felt my head explode....

This is a solid offering from MM. The guitars have a great sound to them and there is some really good solos. While the production is "professional" I have always preffered Spine of Gods rough production. The 1st 6 songs are all strong, as is Facedown. The lyrics to Superjudge are some of my fave all time. If you are looking to get into MM, start at SoG 1st then move on to this one. If I had to try to pick 1 song to buy, it would be a tough call bween Twin Earth and Superjudge.

Retro-rock visionaries Monster Magnet spent much of the 1990s struggling against the prejudices imposed upon image and sound by alternative rock fashion nazis. In fact, it wasn't until that movement's late-'90s decline that the band's dogged persistence finally paid off, when their fourth album, Powertrip, catapulted to gold sales status on the strength of its massive hard rock hit, "Space Lord." In the meantime, Monster Magnet had managed to become one of the most successful and influential bands...
