iTunes Review

In the span of a barely over a year composer John Williams forged the Hollywood film music equivalent of the Triple Crown via Star Wars, Close Encounters and this rich orchestral elegy for director Richard Donner's take on the comic world's Man of Steel. Williams' Oscar-nominated score bristles with a heroism that's the equal of his work for George Lucas' space operas, yet finds considerable soul in the heart-stirring themes that evoke the grace of Superman's flight and bittersweet romance with Lois Lane. Williams' triumphant "Superman March" remains nothing less the musical heart of the entire franchise, an epochal symphonic touchstone that's so indelible it inspired a whole new generation of filmmakers to use it in reviving the superhero's legacy nearly three decades later.

Not the Motion Picture

This is the "Original Motion Picture Score" for Superman, not the soundtrack of "Superman, The Motion Picture". The score is not conducted by John Williams nor performed by the London Symphony Orchestra... I feel taken for $15. Track 8, The Fortress of Solitude is not as stirring as the original, the horns do not blare and ring out with the same intensity as the original. It is at best an uninspired performance. This is yet another example of where i-tunes failes, it looks like it is the original, they do not have the rights to sell the original soundtrack in its entirity, so they sell a second-rate knock-off. Do not buy this...

Not what I wish it was, but still butt-kicking

This performance is not the one that made it to the big screen and, thus, not as good as I wish it would be. For example, in the movie, the Main Title builds and holds you over the edge as the giant "S" for Superman flies before the screen, playing for what I believe to be 4 measures before the theme breaks. TOTALLY AWESOME! It sends chills down your spine! Sadly, in this version, someone made the miserably poor, unenlightened decision to cut that explosion's build down to TWO measures... as if this were a radio edit(?). (I hate idiocy, and it is EVERYWHERE.) You can feel the let down when you compare the two. However, this performance still easily beats the performances that made it into the Superman sequels. It's enthusiastically performed and, I feel, worth downloading. But, darn it, I really wish we had exactly what got into the movie!

Great New Recording

I have been listening to the original recording, and this newer recording is really a nice addition to any John Williams collection.
