iTunes Review

Released in 1999, Supernatural put Carlos Santana back in the spotlight. A new label and a handful of star collaborators (Lauryn Hill, Eric Clapton, Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews) reminded old fans that Santana was still kicking and introduced him to a new generation as well. It remains one of the most adventurous albums in the Santana catalog with highlights as disparate as the Dust Brothers production on “Wishing It Was” and the classic duet with Clapton on “The Calling.” The Legacy Edition includes a bonus disc (available also as a separate album) featuring mostly unreleased tracks from the sessions such as “Bacalao Con Pan,” “Angel Love (Come With Me),” “One Fine Morning” and a Dave Matthews and Carter Beauford outtake, “Rain Down On Me” that highlights the set. An instrumental version of “Smooth,” an extra piece of guitar firepower with Eric Clapton (“The Calling Jam”) and a Spanish dance remix of “Corazón Espinado” and a Pumpin’ Dolls club mix of “Maria Maria” fill out the bonus materials.

This album is like watching your favorite TV show on syndication, it only gets better with time. Yes, most of the songs on here are old songs from the original Supernatural album, but they have been remastered...plus now there are some great remixes and a couple new songs that show just why Carlos Santana is one of the greatest guitarists EVER. Collaborating with Eric Clapton on The Calling Jam and finally doing a studio version of JTR (Rain Down On Me) with Dave Matthews and Carter Beauford show just why this album is a must have for any Santana fan out there!

Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band's early personnel...
