iTunes Review

Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie “Prince” Billy, is forever trying to find a new sound within his own limited, acoustic country-folk weirdness and guitarist Matt Sweeney (Skunk, Zwan, Chavez) never settles in with any one project for long, so these two transient musicians gather together for a one-off project where they share the album billing and the songwriting duties. (Sweeney has served as guitarist on the tour that brought us the live album Summer In the Southeast). Oldham’s musical persona is simply too strong for any collaborator to dominate and while Sweeney manages to keep Oldham on task and away from his lackadaisical wanderings and interjects a few confident guitar lines, Superwolf is an Oldham album from start to finish. There’s a Grateful Dead chug to “My Home Is the Sea,” a lonesome harmony to “What Are You?,” a distant, early warning to the tribal country of “Goat and Ram” and a sublime sadness to “Bed Is For Sleeping” not dissimilar to other fine Oldham works. Just a bit more voltage in spots.

highlight of 2005

This album is simply amazing. The intro, "My Home is the Sea", illustrates the powerful combination of Oldham's lyrical talents and Sweeney's musical backing. "Superwolf" is worth every penny. Now, let's get some early Oldham stuff on itunes.

Well Worth Buying

I bought this album about a year ago. Then I didn't give much thought to it after about one and a half listens. Trying to get in touch with some more folkish music I picked this one up again. I am so pleased with the product that Sweeney and Will Oldhelm (I"m not sure if this is how to spell it, my bad). I am completely in love with the first three tracks and the very last song on this album especially. If you are a fan of Oldhelm's other work or a lover of that NIck Drake and Iron & Wine sound, this album will be up there with your favorites. Give it a shot. You won't regret it.

Modern Classic...

It's good to see Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (Will Oldham) finally getting some attention on iTunes. This is a beutiful album from start to finish. Will Oldham wrote the lyrics for Matt Sweeny to write music around, and the result is an amazing instant classic. Clocking in a just over 2 minnutes, "I Gave You" is one of my all time favorite songs. Oldham's great unique voice, and old school lyrics, along with Sweeny's unique guitar meld great together. BUY IT AND LOVE IT!!

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After his stints performing as Palace, Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, and under his own name throughout the '90s, by the end of the decade Will Oldham seemed to finally settle on the Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker as the main outlet for his work. Regardless of the name he used to release his music or the musicians supporting him, Oldham's style remained largely the same, pitting shambling and often sparse music against his creaky, world-weary voice and literate lyrics. The Louisville, Kentucky native...
