iTunes Review

The Supremes lived up to their name in the late ‘60s, repeatedly topping the pop and R&B charts. The Supremes Sing Holland, Dozier, Holland (1967) ranks among the trio’s standout albums, highlighting the crucial role played by Motown’s top songwriting team in fashioning the group’s sound. The album matches fresh HDH compositions with previously-cut Supremes tracks and tunes first recorded by other Motown artists. The blockbusters here are “You Keep Me Hanging On” and “Love Is Here And Now You’re Gone,” illustrative of both the Supremes’ impeccable vocalizing and HDH’s knack for killer hooks. Those exploring deeper will find Diana Ross personalizing such gems as “I’ll Turn To Stone,” “Goin’ Down For The Third Time” and “I Guess I’ll Always Love You” (previously recorded by the Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas and the Isley Brothers, respectively). Whether the mood is tender (“Remove This Doubt”) or determined (“There’s No Stopping Us Now”), the trio’s voices entwine around the lyrics with seductive charm. With the exception of “Heat Wave” – a song so identified with Martha Reeves that even Ross can’t claim it for her own – all of these tunes are convincing additions to the Supremes’ hit-studded canon.

aka Supremes sing Motown

There is a sense of sophistication with this album, visually and aurally: the cover and its two hit singles "You Keep Me Hangin' On," and "Love Is Here And Now You're Gone." Interestingly enough, neither song has much in the way of vocally harmony - choruses are all sung unison (I wonder who could that pull that off today?). Other than that, the nice thing here is augmented presences of Mary & Flo's backing vocals, especially on the overlooked "Going Down For The Third Time." The other overlooked fact here is that a number of these songs show that Ross wasn't always the best choice for lead vocals. "Heatwave", "Same Old Song," and "I"ll Turn To Stone" could have benefitted from having one of the other two out front. Nevertheless, it's a good listener for the creamy less-processed vocals.

Another great original album!

I just love when itunes puts the original album and not just the compilations because the original albums have unrealeased songs that have never been on iTunes. The two big hit on this album are "You keep me hangin' on" and "Love is here and now your gone" But a great song is "mother you, smother you" It is a great song. I hope that itunes adds the "Reflections" album and the "let the sunshine in" album

going down for the third time...

Biography

Formed: 1961 in Detroit, MI

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s

The most successful American performers of the 1960s, the Supremes for a time rivaled even the Beatles in terms of red-hot commercial appeal, reeling off five number one singles in a row at one point. Critical revisionism has tended to undervalue the Supremes' accomplishments, categorizing their work as more lightweight than the best soul stars (or even the best Motown stars), and viewing them as a tool for Berry Gordy's crossover aspirations. There's no question that there was about as much pop...
