21st Century Surf
Good run of songs exploring a new surf-genre. Instrumental and epic, Shoot the Pier moves the sonic center of surf idioms in an original refreshing way. Using layers of sounds, their exploration of guitar and instruments, melody and direction is often unexpected in a way that works. Great range of emotions. I came to Shoot the Pier listening to college radio on the Internet, (Cousin Mary on KFJC). The DJ introduced the father daughter team with some reverence and after hearing a cut, I spent some iTunes money. To my delight, their music is incredibly beautiful. At times powerful, thoughtful, and playful as the beach always is. This album and their next (Low Hangs the Moon) are worth hearing and rehearing. They are definitely doing something no one else is with surf sounds that makes you realize this is the 21st century.
