Album Review

Surfacing was released as the first Lilith Fair tour hit the road, and Sarah McLachlan benefited enormously from the timing. As the organizer of Lilith Fair, McLachlan was on the cover of magazines across America and Canada, which helped Surfacing debut at number two on the U.S. charts — a particularly remarkable feat since its predecessor, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, peaked at number 50. Although Surfacing didn't offer anything new from McLachlan and wasn't a particularly strong consolidation of her talents, it certainly wasn't a bad record and featured several fine songs, including the single "Building a Mystery."

One of My Favorite Albums

This is Sarah McLachlan at her best. I originally purchased this album for two songs: "Building A Mystery" and "Angel". However, my attention quickly turned to other beautiful songs such as the heartbreaking "I Love You" and the melodicly diverse "Black & White". Anyone who is a fan of soft, soothing music, or just starting to listen to Sarah McLachlan, this is a great album.

Lovely Sentiments

This album is beautiful, in instrumentals as well as McLachlan's alternately haunting and soaring vocals. It has my all-time favorite song, "Angel," as well as some new favorites. I give this album five stars, and I reccomend it to anyone who needs a good relaxing album for those stress-filled days. Detox with Surfacing.

Yes!

This is one of the greatest albums ever made. It is in the tradition of Shawn Colvin's haunting masterpiece Steady On. All songs are great, but I Love You is perhaps my favorite of Sarah's songs.
