The best from the best...
If you have never had the pleasure, Jane Monheit is the finest vocalist of our time. Her phrasing and flawless delivery are entrancing. In a time where the best "American Idol" can find is six mediocre finalists, the likes of Jane Monheit become ever so needed. When musicicans think of music, and vocalists think of vocals, they think of Jane Monheit. The very best.
"Surrender" To Monheit's Many Charms...You'll Love It
The amazingly talented Jane Monheit, arguably one of the best jazz vocalists of our time, has a new album out...and it meets the high expectations she set with her last two recordings. This time, she's changed record labels, puts more emphasis on the orchestra and her arranger Jorge Calandrelli, and has given her disc a Latin theme. Despite all these changes, Monheit still comes out on top. From the album's langorously beautiful opener, "If You Went Away," the listener is hooked. Though the orchestral arrangements seem a bit heavy-handed at first, they soon grow on the listener, and even then, Monheit makes up for any possible shortcomings with her velvety-smooth voice. Highlights are the sultry and rhythmic "So Tinha de Ser Com Voce," (you'll have it on repeat for ages), the heartbreaking "Moon River" (Calandrelli really hits the mark on this arrangement--the piano is gorgeous), and a very beautiful "Caminhos Cruzados." Jane's high-profile retake of "So Many Stars" is a bit disappointing, however--Sergio Mendes' new arrangement sounds too produced and doesn't really fit Monheit, though she acquits herself astoundingly, as usual. (Besides that, the only low points don't involve the songs on the actual album--it's only that Monheit has joined the "exclusive track" phenomenon with this release...virtually every store has different "exclusive tracks" tacked on to the original recording. As a listener, I'd rather have the complete package rather than having to buy the albums from multiple stores just to get a few extra tracks that should have been included on the original album in the first place. Oh well.) This is a top-notch release from Jane Monheit (of course), a great start at a new label (Concord seems to be treating her well musically), and, typically, leaves us all hungry for more. Let's hope Jane's next album comes quickly.
My Favorite Singer is BACK!
With a lovely, pure, pop-tinged jazz voice, Jane should be a bigger star that Diana and Norah! This new set ditches the jazz standards (mostly... which I really miss) but she tackles South American sounds once again with confidence and verve and... DRAMA. I can't wait to see her live on stage again!
