Album Review
Like Johnny Cash before him, Donovan was selected by producer Rick Rubin as a childhood hero he would like to restore to glory. With Rubin's encouragement and production, Donovan does make an impressive comeback with Sutras, which is reminiscent of his earliest records. Sutras abandons the colorful psychedelic pop of his best-known songs for the spare acoustic folk of his first records, and while Donovan's songwriting is a little uneven, the warmth of the performances is charming and welcoming, especially for long-time fans.

Essential Don
I just pulled this one out for the first time in a while and was floored anew at just how quintessential this recording is. Rubin has done us all a huge service by setting up the perfect crucible for Don to do what he has always done best: Deliver the goods with just an acoustic guitar and an occasional upright bass. Don does some delicate and deft fingerstyle arrangements here, and digs out some classic (and astonishigly cliche'-free) lyrics and melodies. The velvet voice is in fine form and the dynamics are minimal. Don't bother trying to listen to this in traffic----but do set yourself aside some downtime and the old magick will come, I promise!
I love it!
This album is truly beautiful... like most of Donovan's music, it puts me in a catatonic trance and forces me to daydream.
Trippy Brooding Lullabye
This is an excellent album. Rubin somehow took this collection of off-kilter hokey songs and made it into a soothing, peaceful gem. I have no idea how this has gone overlooked. Please give it a listen if you are into Donovan or anything singer/songwriterish.
