iTunes Review

With Matthew Sweet producing, The Bangles return to their roots with an album of pure ‘60s-influenced jangle pop. The band members were always excellent harmony vocalists, and their playing made their early records some of the most exciting of any era. (All Over the Place is an essential piece of popcraft, while Different Light is their commercial peak.) “Anna Lee (Sweetheart of the Sun)” has a sun-dappled arrangement illustrating their determination to stay true to their influences. Todd Rundgren’s early band The Nazz is represented with a fuzz-buzz cover of “Open My Eyes,” while the obscure British girl group The McKinleys have their “Sweet and Tender Romance” brought back to life as a perfect fit. But it’s originals such as “Under a Cloud,” “I’ll Never Be Through with You,” and “Mesmerized” that prove the group is as good, if not better, 30 years on. Stripped down to a trio of Susanna Hoffs and Vicki and Debbi Peterson, The Bangles are doing some of their finest work in years.

Customer Reviews

Well, hello there!

So THIS is what The Bangles have been waiting so long to record. An incredibly diverse, infinitely hummable/listenable, gorgeous bunch of songs that might just be one of the best CDs to come out this year -- in case anyone cares. Heard a selections of the songs on NPR this evening and immediately had to buy it. Even if you've never been a Bangles fan, this is really something quite special. It's not your "Manic Monday," folks, it might actually be something even better...and dare I say, quite awesome.

Had no idea

Just bought this collection. Great stuff. I barely knew the bangles except a couple of hits. I heard a nice review on fresh air (NPR) today and liked what I heard. Loving these songs. Such a new sound yet brings you back to a sixties/seventies folk-rock feel. Great tunes with terrific harmonies and instrumentation. I like the production a lot. Sweet sounding for sure, which is a good thing to me. It's still early to say, but one of the best I've heard this year.

I had no idea they were deeper than Walk Like an Egyptian. Not a bad song, but sometimes a hit can make people get the wrong impression as I did. Novelty. But man, I'm really having my eyes opened to their artistry.

Loving this collection and going back to others.

Enjoy it.

Spectacular!

An absolute must-have for fans old and new. A couple of great singles (Anna Lee, I'll Never Be Through With You) a couple of cool covers (Sweet and Tender Romance, Open My Eyes) and supremely listenable throughout. Their best since "Different Light."

Biography

Formed: 1981 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

The Bangles combined the chiming riffs and catchy melodies of British Invasion guitar pop with a hint of the energy of new wave. In the process, they became one of the handful of all-female bands of the '80s to win both critical and commercial success. The critical success came first — with their self-titled debut EP and full-length album, All Over the Place — and popular success arrived once they polished their sound, added some synthesizers, and deviated slightly from their...
