Customer Reviews
One of the best records of 2006
The Frames' frontman Glen Hansard finally released his own solo album, collaborating with a talented Czech singer & pianist Marketa Irglova. Originally planning to make only few songs for a movie soundtrack, a whole album was born: ten songs dealing both love and hate, both leaving and asking for forgiveness. The voices of both singers, who perform together for several last years, complement one another perfectly. Their guitar and piano work brilliantly with the violin of Marja Tuhkanen and with the cello of Bertrand Galen, who accepted the invitation to guest on the record: and inviting these two well harmonized musicians was a great idea, as the strings give another dimension to Glen's and Marketa's music. The album, named after the book written by a Czech author Josef Skvorecky, is fragile, but also very strong at the same time. And very good, too: Brian Eno, who got an advanced copy, kept playing it on repeat again and again...
Something for all...
This man and woman bring nothing but beauty, harmony and meaningfulness to the world of music. They, especially Hansard's song-writing, clear any confusion about the role music plays in the lives of those who cherish the sound and melody of the world in which we leave. Bravo to these two people for finding each other and fusing their lives together to make such gorgeous music (not to mention a fantastic movie.) "Once" is a warm and gratifying story of two struggling musicians trying to make ends meet, but as they themselves meet the right path becomes apparent through their inseparable affection for writing and creating music. Through this blossoming friendship between strangers and the harmony they bring to the lives of the other, we are reminded how the expression and art of music brings us together in more ways than we might have originally expected. This movie is definitely one to see for anyone who has an appreciation for the lyrical world around us and for anyone who has a passion in life and needs to be reminded that its not all about the final destination, but happiness can also be found along the way.
Fantastic!!!
absolutely an incredible album. Glen Hansard is one of today's greatest songwriters. And what he and Marketa Irglova have done here is nothing short of beautiful. Emotional and riveting songs with gorgeous melodies. I've been waiting for months for this thing to be available in the states. I can't give it enough stars.
