Album Review

Swing Swang Swung, Guardian's third release, is a failed experiment with acoustic folk music. While a few chords and riffs appear in the songs from time to time, the balance on the album is poor and most of the melodies fail to even be catchy. No matter how hard it tries, "The Way Home Back" never provides a decent hook and is just as dull as the rest of the album. Swing Swang Swung is hardly as strong as any of Guardian's previous music, and it shows a midpoint of departure from their classic rock & roll, evident on their follow-up, Buzz.

Customer Reviews

I beg to differ...

The review of this record by All Music Guide is slightly irritating and dead wrong. That writer obviously never listened past the first song This is a great Guardian album—one that showcases the band's strengths as individual songwriters as well as their usual sheer audacity to go against the grain of what was cool at the time. This album did indeed yield the Bach-penned radio hits "Endless Summer"—which indeed rocks—as well as the poignant "Like The Sun" but one of the true gems is the autobiographical Tony Palacios song "See You In Heaven" which became a staple in the bands live repertoire. Yes—this album was a radical departure from the bluesy swagger of the two preceding albums—but it is one that defies trends and truly still stands up today.

Top notch album

Swing Swang Swung is one of my favorite albums of all time. I think they have a great mix of fun songs, sad songs, and serious songs. See You in Heaven is one of the best tribute songs I have ever heard done. I used to have the cassette tape and I wore that thing out within in a year.

Still good after 13 years!

I enjoyed this album immensely when it came out, and I just found it on iTunes and think it still rocks! It is not the typical Guardian, but I think it shows their versitility and skill as musicians that not only did they take this chance, they can play the music well! (If you like it, you should check out their Spanish albums...a lot of the same songs, but in spanish.)
