iTunes Review

Tony Bennett truly delivers on this incredible recording made some 40 years since his last Christmas album (1968’s Snowfall). With the late, great Count Basie’s big band in tow, this collection of carols is a beautifully panoramic sounding affair. Bennett sounds equally confident and comfortable here as “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” opens with the swagger and aplomb of a black-tie event. Monty Alexander fills in for Basie on piano making the cool jam on “Silver Bells” sound relaxed and hip. The slower and cinematic sounding “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is easily the most gorgeous number here with a lush, full-stringed orchestra and a 25-second-long harmonica solo by acclaimed jazz harmonica player Toots Thielemans. Bennett’s daughter Antonia shows up to duet with her father on an adorable version of Irving Berlin’s “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” and the kinetic orchestrations of Frank Foster (one of Sinatra’s arrangers) really help bring this number to life. Bennett’s second album of Christmas carols is a grand Holiday party that’s as classy as it is swingin’.

Stop what you are doing and buy this now. It is Tony at his finest. An instant classic. Amazing to think he's pushing 80 and making killer records.

This Deserves Five Stars

This cd would have received five stars had it not been for the repeats from his first Christmas album released almost forty years ago. Outside of this little issue this cd is a swinger and we really need one of those given the somber mood of this year's holiday season. The purchase price is a steal, perhaps due to the current economy? This exact version complete with the video retails for $19.99 so I'd download it here and one more thing, the album artwork, the inner and back label of the jewel case, is a painting by Tony himself.

Tony Bennett's career has enjoyed three distinct phases, each of them very successful. In the early '50s, he scored a series of major hits that made him one of the most popular recording artists of the time. In the early '60s, he mounted a comeback as more of an adult-album seller. And from the mid-'80s on, he achieved renewed popularity with generations of listeners who hadn't been born when he first appeared. This, however, defines Bennett more in terms of marketing than music. He himself probably...
