iTunes Review

After a hard-fought competition on the reality show Rock Star, J.D. Fortune won the right to sing lead with INXS, leading to the release of Switch in 2005. It was a difficult job from the start — the voice and persona of the late Michael Hutchence had given the Australian band its identity during its hitmaking heyday. Still, Switch makes a spirited attempt to integrate Fortune into the group, succeeding more often than it fails. INXS returns to its signature mix of moody guitar textures and nervous rhythms for much of the album and the enticing decadence of the band’s earlier hits is recaptured on tracks like “Devil’s Party,” “Pretty Vegas” and “Hungry.” The strutting “Like It Or Not” and the slinky “Never Let You Go” reaches back to the band’s ‘80s dance floor triumphs. Fortune’s vaguely ominous croon works well on “Afterglow,” though “Us” finds him mired in excess sweetness. Though it strains for effect in spots, when Switch clicks, the results invoke the band’s old snap and resonance.

Old to New

How could anyone ever fill Michaels shoes? That was my question. Its been answered the real INXS is back. If i did not know better Michael was right there with JD beltin out every song with the same look and movements of old. Do i recommend this CD? A for sure Yes and also see them in concert it is a birth of newness that the music industry needed. Welcome back INXS and dont go away again! Stay around and bless us all for years to come we need it!

Didn't know I could love INXS w/out Michael!

I had the privilege to see INXS w/JD Fortune recently in San Francisco. I saw INXS in 86 in a bar in Hartford CT and again in '88 in an arena in Philadelphia. Own all the Michael-era albums (!) and CDs. Broke my heart when Michael died. I didn't really get into the reality show, though I had checked it out a couple of times. So I wasn't sure I'd be able to truly relax and enjoy a concert without Michael. Was I ever wrong! JD rocked the house - he's cute, fun, and sexy as sin! And what a treat it was to see all the rest of the band up there playing their hearts out and loving every minute of it! JD has done an excellent job making the older songs his own, without trying to "be" Michael, and the new material is just as great as the hits from Kick and X (which I consider their best 2 albums). Switch will join the INXS rotation in my iPod and I'll be keeping my ears open for more - yeah!

Switch

This is one of the best albums that I own J.D. is a perfect match to Michael Hutchens I think that he is a great artist and a very good performer.

Biography

Formed: 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australi

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

INXS hailed from the pubs of Australia, which is part of the reason the band never comfortably fit in with new wave. Even when they branched out into synth pop on their early recordings, they were underpinned by a hard, Stonesy beat and lead singer Michael Hutchence's Jagger-esque strut. Ultimately, these were the very things that made INXS into international superstars in the late '80s. By that time, the group had harnessed its hard rock, dance, and new wave influences into a sleek, stylish groove...
