Album Review

Silversun Pickups hold Smashing Pumpkins as close to their heart as, say, Mudhoney hold the Stooges — perhaps even more, as Silversun Pickups (whose very initials are the same as the Pumpkins) act as though nothing happened between Siamese Dream in 1993 and Swoon in 2009. Try as they may, the bandmembers cannot deny the passage of time, or their geography, for Silversun Pickups are creatures of their time and place, just as their idols were. At their core, the Pumpkins were Midwestern misfits, something that was evident in their very appearance and sound. In contrast, Silversun Pickups shimmer sweetly on the surface, a sound suited for Los Angeles. Silversun Pickups avoid unpleasantness on Swoon, wallowing in washes of sound derived equally from guitars and whispered vocals and glimmering in the sunlight. It's pleasant enough, particularly when the breathy vocals fade away to leave behind cascades of guitars, but still remains an approximation of Smashing Pumpkins at their peak.

Awesome from start to finish

This is one of the best overall albums I've heard in a long time. Every single song is distinct and addictive. A good balance is achieved between the instruments and the vocals. The singer has such a unique voice, and songs like The Royal We (my favorite from the album!) show his range. Besides the amazing and unique vocals, the lyrics are also noteworthy. I still haven't quite worked out what each song is about, but they definitely keep me thinking. There's a subtle creepy undertone to this album, which may have something to do with the singer's voice and the music, not necessarily the meanings of the songs (although a few of the lyrics are pretty dark). But that only makes me like it more! I can't come up with anything negative to say about this album.

This band's sound is captivating and I can't wait to hear more from them.

ping!

new distribution deal = re-release

Can wait for the next album!

I want to hear more! This is not enough! Silversun Pickups, hurry up with your next album!

Biography

Formed: Los Angeles, CA

Years Active: '00s

Brian Aubert (guitar/vocals), Nikki Monninger (bass), Christopher Guanlao (drums), and Joe Lester (keyboards) comprise the swarthy indie rock stylings of Silversun Pickups. The quartet's textured melodies capture the hypnotic dream pop threads of My Bloody Valentine and pop bittersweetness of Earlimart, and such a blend has wowed their native L.A. since 2005. Silversun Pickups issued their debut release, the six-song Pikul EP, that same year while shared show dates with the likes of Brendan Benson,...
