Album Review

Recorded soon after the tragic and untimely death of guitarist Dave Prichard from leukemia, Symbol of Salvation is arguably Armored Saint's finest hour. In what is certainly their best-produced and most diverse album, the band pays tribute to their fallen friend with every performance. And since many of these tracks were co-written by Prichard in his last months on earth, the results are often extremely personal and dramatic — never more so than on the hard-driving "Burning Question," the beautiful "Another Day," and the epic "Tainted Past," which actually features a solo from Prichard. Other highlights, such as "Reign of Fire" and "Dropping Like Flies," find the band thrashing harder than ever, while "Last Train Home" and "Truth Always Hurts" (written by new guitarist Jeff Duncan and returning founding member Phil Sandoval) see them at their most commercial. The chaotic drumming of "Tribal Dance" is another wonderful surprise, and the venemous "Hanging Judge" is simply an awesome all-around metal song. While all Armored Saint albums (save for the very average Raising Fear) have their particular strengths, Symbol of Salvation is probably the best place to start discovering the band.

Saint's best

A really good all-around metal album, and Armored Saint at their finest. "Spineless" is a blistering track, dripping with all the venom John Bush can muster. It's become one of my all-time favorite songs. The 2003 re-issue is a three-disc set. Disc 2 contains the original 4-track demos for every song on the album (except Half-Drawn Bridge), plus part 1 of a 90-plus minute conversation with Metal Blade founder Brian Slagel interviewing the entire band about the making of the album. The interview continues on Disc 3. This gives us a special insight into what it was like for them losing Dave Prichard and making the decision to soldier on. They also discuss the album track-by-track and reflect on their thoughts about the album more than a decade after it's release. For even a casual Saint fan it's worth it to pick up the Spec. Ed. It's a great look inside one of metal's most under-rated outfits.

Near Perfect Metal!

One of the truly great releases ever!! This whole recording is first rate with Tainted Past and Another Day being my favorite tracks. Only song I don't love is Tribal Dance and its at least unique. If you are a fan of old school metal at all, this is an absolute must trailing only "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" on my all-time favorite metal albums. Why was this band so overlooked??

Under the Radar

This is one of those bands that just did everything right on one album. Catchy grooves and in your face vocals/solos. Reign of Fire is one of those tunes that brings it all together. John is back together with AS now, and their new album is good, but this will always be their jewel in the crown.

Although many associate hard rock from Los Angeles in the early '80s as all glossed up and pop-based (Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot, etc.), there were a select few true metal bands to emerge from the same locale, such as Armored Saint. Formed in 1982 and originally comprised of members John Bush (vocals), David Pritchard (guitar), Phil Sandoval (guitar), Joey Vera (bass), and Gonzo (drums, brother of Phil Sandoval), the group specialized in a style of straight-ahead metal that was compared to such...
