Only for the Sax Concerto!
I'll be completely honest. I am not a fan of Philip Glass. Besides the 3rd symphony, I find his music to be quite bland. I guess you either love or hate him. However! His Concerto For Saxophone Quartet has proven to be a pleasant surprise! It is not only a very refreshing piece coming from the composer, but I believe it to be one of his greatest, if not best, works. To be perfectly honest, this sax quartet can hold its own with any of the other "big" classical quartets such as the Bozza, Glazunov, Dubois, and Marcaix. It may even be my new favorite work for saxophone quartet. It has 2 slow and beautiful movements (3rd movement, that is what the tenor is SUPPOSED to sound like), and two fast ones. And it is played by arguably the best sax quartet out there, the Rascher Quartet. Great pieces of music played by the best in the world. What more can you ask for? If you have any love of the saxophone, do yourself a favor and get at least the quartet!
