Falling halfway between the modern R&B of Introducing the Hardline and the extravagant Neither Fish nor Flesh, Symphony or Damn is Terence Trent D'Arby's most ambitious album yet. It's also his best, because it takes the fine songwriting of his debut and melds it to the sonic excesses of Fish. Sure, some of it is embarrassing (it's hard not to cringe during the "Welcome to My Monasteryo" declaration at the beginning of the album), but more often than not, D'Arby's experimentations succeed, and succeed grandly, at that.

Overlooked
TTD or as he is known now as Sananda Maitreya. Is truly an amazing song writer and artist. All his albums are amazing. Imagine Otis Redding backed by Lenny Kravitz, Prince and the Rolling Stones and you might get a picture of how great TTD is. If you can find it pick up his Wild Card album. Even his first band "The Touch" is fun to listen to. He is for sure overlooked. If you dig funky soulful great thought provoking lyrics..give TTD a chance.
Probably not a masterpiece but:
Only one star? No, I'm afraid not. This is probably not a masterpiece but is a very strong album, very enjoyable. T.I.T.S./ F&J, is one of my favorites tunes on this album, it has rythm, structure, well sounding, "I Still Love You" is another excellent song. This album has many variances on it, sometimes grooving sometimes in a mood style. It was made by D'Arby alone, he plays all the instruments and sings. My advice is, buy a couple of songs here in iTunes, and probably you'll need more, if you don't like the songs I mentioned before, then this albums is not for you, but man it deserves the four stars for sure! Happy listenings!
Seasons
Bought this CD when it first came out. And I have given it numerous, numerous listens since. I've bought every TTD CD since, hoping for another taste of instant classics (this CD isn't full of them, but it contains at least 4 or 5). And "Seasons" alone is worth the price of admission. This song is perhaps one of the most beautiful, perfect, love/break-up songs of all time. Not THE #1... but wayyy up there. Listen to it close. In headphones. This is an UNbelieveable song. The fact that TTD plays all the instruments, sings 'em all ... and produces a record with so many interesting styles... says a lot about the artist and this music. I just keep hoping he commits again to producing such great music.
