Album Review

This is the eponymous debut recording from New Jersey's Symphony X. The obvious debt to Yngwie Malmsteen dominates the session in arrangement, singing, and playing. Founder/leader/guitarist Michael Romeo would eventually go on to develop his own style as well as an identity for the band, but there's not a hint of that here. While this release went largely unnoticed in the U.S., it was popular in Japan, which wasn't too much of a surprise given their large Malmsteen fan base. Humble beginnings for what was to become a very original and influential band.

Shockingly Good

So I guess anything by Symphony X can be expected to be amazing. But this album is intimidating. It has a singer that is not even close to the caliber of Russell Allen, it's their first album, it's old, etc. Buy it. It took me a long time to try it out, and I was not disappointed by any means. Rod Tyler's vocals are sufficient enough to fill out the verses and choruses, but the musicianship is what will blow you away. I'd go as far as to say that this is their best album musically, although Russell Allen's presence is definitely missed. Just buy it.
