Album Review
If you want to learn the magic of soulful troubadour Raul Midón in just five easy minutes, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better example than Synthesis’ opening track, “Don't Be a Silly Man.” The lyrics read like an essay about meeting your idols, but the singer’s old-school phrasing and a jazzy backing band turn the words into a singalong song, and soon Midon’s rather personal story becomes something any given listener can adapt to their own world. This balance harkens back to Bill Withers and the California singer/songwriters of the ‘70s and there’s little doubt on “Next Generation” that Midon has a nostalgic, classically mellow heart as he pines “Infinity takes no time at all these days.” He still takes advantage of some modern freedoms as “About You” skanks with a modern ska beat, while on “About You,” the singer repeatedly drops the Parental Advisory-earning F-bomb. Besides that, Midon’s whole soul-meets-folk-meets-pop-with-a-touch-of-blues wouldn’t be as possible if he wasn’t living in the loose mash-up age of shuffling iPods, Keb' Mo', and Corinne Bailey Rae. Being blind seems to have given the man of gift of seeing past ulterior motives, and aging humanists who feel truth is a value that’s just not valued enough anymore will find plenty of comfort here. Add a worthwhile, minimal cover of the Beatles “Blackbird” and the attractive, oddball lounge number “Everyone Deserves a Second Chance” and you’ve got a laid-back throwback that’s highly rewarding.

A truly gifted musican and songwriter
FINALLY! After State of Mind and A World Within A World, Raul comes out with a smoking hot new Album/CD. The key is listening to his lyrics and the way the music is put together.
On Bonnie's Song we get to hear Raul's brilliant trumpet mimickry.
On Everyone Deserves a Second Chance we get the smoothness of brazillian jazz. It sounds like a mixture of a Stevie Wonder song and the Girl From Imepena. Plus we get more of that brilliant, brilliant vocal trumpet.
And the uplifting, beautifully sung song Whenver You Call My Name is one of those songs that freeze you in your tracks.
Invisible Chains is a great reggae tune and I dare anyone to not bebop their head along with this song... wow... the guy is an amazing, amazing song writer. And if that is him doing the trumpet thing on this song... then I will be completely surprise because it sounds authentic.
And I've been a Raul Midon fan for years, but About You, took me by surprise. It sounds like one type of song until you get to the chorus. It almost sounds like the Police "Message in a Bottle" and in a way, it is a message.
He does a wonderful cover of Blackbird, but the CD ends with a toe tapping, fun song, Why Am I Feeling So Bad. I can imagine this song finding itself in a movie.
So in the end, I enjoyed the CD from beginning to end, it structured like its telling a story. And it shouldn't under pop, but Jazz, maybe R&B/Soul but definitely not Pop. The guy has a great voice, he is a brilliant guitar player and his songs are inspirational and demand paying attention to. Buy it, tell you friends to buy it and if he comes to your area, if he is within a 100 miles, make the drive and go see him, because as great as he is on his CDs, he is AMAZING live.
Midón is at his finest
Anyone with a passion for a seamless marriage between words and music should give this a liste. An even stronger performance than State Of Mind. The music is like a trip into a lush, unspoilt jungle - an intimate adventure. The lyrics educate and elevate. The range of musical flavors runs tha gamet from jazz to reggae-tinted.
Buy the album. It's awesome.
not feeling it
i must say im dissapointed... i worshiped him after seeing him live and buying state of mind.... this is not like his old stuff which is bomb
