Amazing Performance by a Versatile Group
Perhaps because they began as street musicians, the San Francisco Saxophone Quartet has found a distinct niche in the world of chamber music. The first time I heard them (at a friend's house as background music) I though I was listening to a full chamber orchestra. Indeed it took some concerted effort on my part to recognize that the rich textures and fullness of the Baroque pieces on this album were being produced on saxophones. I strongly recommend this album (and others by this group) for all lovers of Baroque chamber music who are interested in great performance and, periodicially, befuddling their friends.
Masterful arrangements and terrific tone
At times I forget I'm listening to arrangements originally intended for completely different instruments. The tone of the SFSQ is so pure and they blend to well, it's an incredible treat to listen to them. They'll probably never get the recognition they deserve. Many passers-by might not appreciate the versitility of the saxohpone in the classical genre and assume the sax is a jazz only instrument, and I imagine many classical afficiandos would dismiss the group as a gimmick. But they are wonderful and this CD is a must buy for anyone who enjoys the saxohpone.
Tails Of The City
The tonality is so clear it's obvious it took hours upon hours to perfect their tone. Bravo for sure.
