Album Review
Lisa Loeb is a rarity in the music industry. She released her first single — the gentle "Stay," taken from the Reality Bites soundtrack — before she was signed to any record label and saw it hit number one. Record companies were eager to sign her, and she eventually settled with Geffen. Instead of rushing out her debut album, she waited over a year, releasing Tails in the fall of 1995. Surprisingly, it didn't fade away, becoming a hit with adult alternative radio stations and listeners. That's because Tails delivers on the promise of "Stay." While the basic folk-rock elements of the song are present, much of the material on the record doesn't sound like her breakthrough hit; there are some distorted guitars here and there, and she even rocks out a little bit. Nothing on Tails is as good as "Stay," either; there are too many sophomoric lyrics and unfinished melodies, but it is a pleasant record and, in its own way, charming. There is an innocence and naïveté about Loeb that makes her music sweetly ingratiating, even when her ideas are underdeveloped.

Funky and cool
Maybe funky isn't the right word. It's just that her lyrics are so...different. If you look at the lyrics on paper, you don't know how the heck she got them to sound right, but let me tell you: SHE DOES. Go for "Snow Day", "Taffy", and "Rose-Colored Times" after you get the obvious "Do you sleep" and "Stay". This is by far her best album.
one hit me in the head
Where can you find an album that says everything so purely and simply about falling in and out of love? You could find it in 1995 and if you didn't find it then you should probably find it now. Lisa Loeb's Tails is one of the most original, raw albums of its time. Lyrically astounding and musically amazing. Rarely do you find an album that matches its hit single, Tails does just that.
Long Time Fan
I'll have to say that when I first purchased this album at a CD Store I only bought it for the song "Stay" and being all of about 14 I would play that one song repeatedly non-stop until the CD had almost melted. A couple of times before I could restart the song "Stay" my CD would start over and I would hear "It's Over" which was equally as catchy as "Stay". To make a long story even longer I finally listened to the whole CD on repeat for about two years non-stop. Lisa Loeb's songs are sentimental without being sappy, sweet without being gushy, and deep without losing meaning in extra hooks or lyrics. If you enjoy such female artists as Jewel, Alanis, or Tori, I believe you should give this CD a try. Her other albums are good as well.
