Album Review

There haven't been too many keyboards-and-drums duos in the history of rock & roll (Lee Michaels and Attila come to mind), but it's easy to wonder why after listening to Tom Merrigan and Andy Pierce, aka the New Rags, on their six-song, 16-minute EP Take Jennie to Brooklyn. Actually, the sound here is not so much reminiscent of Michaels' classic rock or Attila's heavy metal as it is like another unadorned rock duo, the White Stripes, with keyboards substituted for electric guitar. "Recorded entirely on Otari MX5050 MKIII-8 to achieve the fullest truth," reads a sleeve note, and the fullest truth entails some degree of distortion, but all in the name of fervent rock & roll. Merrigan sings in a slightly strained tenor while providing lots of electric piano and organ chording, and Pierce pounds away busily as if the two were in a garage somewhere. The music could have been made any time in the last 40 years, from the sound of it, with a likely date closer to 1965 than 2005. But the excitement never lets up, and the listener never wants it to stop.

Starts out good....

I first heard "Your Room" on Indiefeed, and got mesmerized. I couldnt get the tune out of my head. Powerfull, dense, loaded with energy. After listening to it a few dozen times, I assumed that the rest of their stuff should be the same. Boy was I wrong. It seems that this New York duo were looking to experiment with something, and it worked for one song. The rest of the EP seems...amateur. There's no cohesion or talent in the rest of this. Not worth the whole six bucks. Would recommend the song though.

Best I've heard in a while!

They found me on MySpace and I usually delete random band requests, but the first few seconds of "Your Room" had me hooked! If you are into, or missing, some of that 60s Garage Rock, you have found the right place! Brilliant EP!

Simply Excellent!

We heard them first on the CD we bought with the movie The Graduate and we were hooked. This is a truly innovative duo with original and catchy music that you will find yourself singing and humming and thinking about for a long time. I highly recommend this album and look forward to hearing more from these guys! Surf the Seven Seas is outstanding! Your Room is amazing! And even the music only Russian March is attention getting. Way to go guys!

Brooklyn-based group the New Rags bill themselves as the world's only pop-rock-ragtime duo. That duo consists of Tom Merrigan (who plays a Fender Rhodes electric piano and sings) and Andrew Pierce (who drums). They self-released their debut EP, Take Jennie to Brooklyn, in 2005. "Your Room," a track from the disc, became a hit in Japan and later was remixed by DJ Z-Trip for use in an Australian...
