One of rock’s master journeymen, Steve Miller nimbly shifted from psychedelic blues to mainstream pop in the mid-‘70s. The cheeky charm of “The Joker” provided the model for a spate of hits to follow, each of them defined by catchy riffs and buoyant melodies. Greatest Hits 1974-1978 compiles the key tracks from the Steve Miller Band’s prime period as a hit-making machine. These undeniably ear-snagging tunes cut through the airwaves of their era and couldn’t help but raise a smile. True, the lyrics to songs like “Rock ‘n Me,” “Jungle Love,” and “Swingtown” don’t win any prizes for profundity. But Miller deserves praise for his clean, sinewy production approach, surrounding his punchy guitar attack with synthesizer washes and tight harmonies. The genial rush of “Jet Airliner” and the twangy groove of “Take the Money and Run” make them near-perfect radio fare, and such atmospheric, thoughtful tunes as “Wild Mountain Honey” and “Fly Like an Eagle” succeed musically, if not as philosophic statements. Through it all, Miller sings with an easy-going air, keeping things casual yet always professional. This best-of set attests to his ability to keep a-rockin’ with skill, zest and a sense of fun.
