Album Review

With a sound that veers from the acoustic simplicity and poetic lyricism of coffeehouse folk to the bouncy, lo-fi infectiousness of D.I.Y. indie pop, this California quartet writes melodies so damn catchy, you might almost think you've heard them before. Songs like "Go Ahead" and "Bulletproof" showcase the band's most distinctive asset — the sweet vocals and bittersweet lyrics of Jenny Lewis — while the breezy hooks and driving beats of tunes like "Wires and Waves" and "Always" show surprising commercial potential. The 13-song album has a few weak spots — guitarist Blake Sennett's cracking vocals make him sound like Elliott Smith's nervous kid brother on "Small Figures in a Vast Expanse," while a few of the down-tempo songs slow the album's momentum — but stronger numbers like the gorgeous horn-laden waltz of "Don't Deconstruct" are the sound of a young band coming into its own.

Customer Reviews

Vastly underrated

"Take Offs and Landings" is probably Rilo Kiley's best album. Diverse sounds and clever lyrics grace every song and touch the listener on a personal level. Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley's frontwoman) truly knows how to write a sing a song. However, it is to be noted that Rilo Kiley has a much different sound on this CD as opposed "More Adventurous" and "Under the Blacklight." A definite must-buy for an indie rock/pop fan. Standouts include: August Wires and Waves Science Vs. Romance Pictures of Success

i'm madly in love with this album

this is easily my favorite album from rilo kiley. each song has the kind of stuck-in-your-head catchiness and thoughtful lyrics that make them memorable. they've found they're own sound, and it sounds amazing. i highly reccomend it to everybody!

Beautiful album

This is too nice an album not to have a review. With such high points as "Don't Deconstruct" and "Science Vs. Romance" this album might sit in your library for a while on shuffle until you fully come to love the songs-- but the wait will 100% be worth it.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Like their West Coast contemporaries in Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley steadily gained traction in indie pop circles throughout the late '90s and early 2000s before the record industry (and public at large) officially took note. Led by former child actors Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Blake Sennett (guitar, vocals), the L.A.-based quartet held its first practice in 1998. Bassist Pierre de Reeder and drummer Dave Brock (later replaced by ex-Foundation Lassie member Jason Boesel) completed...
