iTunes Review

An EP used to bridge the stopgap between Dr. Dog’s breakthrough Easy Beat and its follow-up, We All Belong, Takers and Leavers is offered in the spirit of an indie rock tradition that also includes Pavement’s Watery, Domestic and Dinosaur Jr.’s Whatever’s Cool With Me. With two songs from We All Belong (“Ain’t It Strange,” “Die, Die, Die”) and three outtakes, Takers and Leavers accomplishes its mission by reminding its audience why Dr. Dog is outstanding without overshadowing its anticipation for We All Belong. This mini-album ebbs and flows like a full-length, leaving the release to feel more like the skeleton of a full album than a collection of throwaways. More classical than anything from Easy Beat, the opener “Ain’t It Strange” is a Phil Spector song in slow motion — the band is quickly making this brand of expertly arranged epic its calling card. “Goner” is Dr. Dog’s own “Rock’N’Roll Suicide,” with vocalist Toby Leaman playing Ziggy Stardust to a burning house of dueling guitars and grand piano. The remaining songs split the difference between Easy Beat’s streaming pop promise and rough-hewn acoustics, proving that Dr. Dog is only sharpening their focus on a sound they delivered so strikingly on Easy Beat.

Taker

Dr. Dog is one of the best groups out there today. Their live show is unbelievable... and their music has a lot of throwbacks to the Beatles. I got an advance copy of this CD, and have been listening to it a lot. Also, make sure to check out "Easy Beat", one of my favorite albums of all time.

one of the best bands out now

Great EP, I have Toothbrush and Easy Beat as well. This album took a bit of a different turn, but it is a good one...it shows character that they can change and improve their sound. Each song has its hooks, and all are well written, with some lyrical ties back to their old albums. Really nice, short and sweet.

These guys must be heard!

I saw Dr. Dog open for The Raconteurs in Atlanta and was very impressed. I knew nothing and they had me from the gitgo. Check them out! I hear a lot of different influences, like Neil Young meets the Band, but they make it sound fresh and ultimately they sound like Dr. Dog.

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Philadelphia, PA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Philadelphia-based Dr. Dog are part of a long tradition of D.I.Y. pop oddballs who blend unapologetic '60s pop worship with lo-fi recording techniques and an apparent disregard for current trends. The group began as a part-time offshoot of the more traditional indie rock act Raccoon. Over the course of several years, guitarist Toby Leaman and drummer Scott McMicken found enough free time to record the casual, sprawling 35-track set The Psychedelic Swamp in a basement rehearsal space, finally...
