Album Review

Taking Chances: Live at the Dakota finds journeyman trumpeter Terell Stafford leading his quintet through a performance at the Dakota Bar & Grill in Minneapolis, MN in June of 2005. A fiery improvisor with formidable trumpet technique and an ear for knotty, post-bop lines Stafford has graced the albums of countless other artists and it's always a pleasure to hear him get a chance to stretch-out on his own. Joining him here is a stellar ensemble including saxophonist Tim Warfield, pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Derrick Hodge, and drummer Dana Hall. From the frenetic and foot stomping lead-off of Stafford original "A Nick Off the Mark" to the unexpectedly plaintive and bluesy take on the traditional lullaby "Jesus Loves Me" and the similarly engaging ballad "Old Folks," Taking Chances is a superb entry into Stafford's discography. This is urbane, cerebral, and soulful modern jazz.

A Must Have

Terell Stafford is one of the most in-demand trumpet players on the scene today. As a current member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Matt Wilson Art's and Crafts, and the Clayton Brothers Quintet, here we see a fine example of Terell's best work to date. I have always thought that Terell's studio albums were fantastc, but they never did justice to the way Terell plays live. Finally, "Taking Chances – Live at the Dakota" provides a clear example of Terell’s one-of-kind improvisational style and displays his true mastery of the instrument. This live album also features the great Tim Warfield, Jr. on tenor and soprano saxophones as well as one of the most intense rhythm sections I have ever heard; Bruce Barth, piano; Derrick Hodge, bass; Dana Hall, drums. If you haven’t seen this group live, do yourself a favor and find out when and where they are playing. In the meantime, grab this album for a taste.
