iTunes Review

Here stand the albums that made Robin Trower's legend. Having left the confines of Procol Harum, Trower assembled a perfect power trio (with James Dewar's dark, guttural vocals setting the standard for a hard rock singer) and released five definitive albums that belong in any serious hard rock fan's collection. To recap, that's Twice Removed from Yesterday, Bridge of Sighs, For Earth Below, Live!, and Long Misty Days. This collection adds a few single edits, b-sides, and an outtake. It's the early-'70s version of hard rock, heavy on blues influences and a mix of tempos. There's a slight preference for slower, heavier tunes, such as "Bridge of Sighs," "In This Place," "Daydream," and "Hannah," though the high-spirited and upbeat "Day of the Eagle" and "Too Rolling Stoned" gather necessary steam. Trower's Fender Stratocaster tone is clearly influenced by Jimi Hendrix's, but with its own depth and purity of phrasing. There's a reason Metallica's Kirk Hammett is a devoted fan.

robin trower the chrysalis years

A great collection from his early years. This is when he was his best. I highly recommend it.

this release includes 1976 robin trower live which you cant buy on itunes ... why i wonder

Main course

Have never known where/what to categorize this band other than hard rock. When put there, you loose what their sound meant to a generation. Progressive, early alternative, hard rock can be other monikers. Ultimately, once you get beyond the radio staples, you begin to realize their importance in music history. That's where this offering gives you a decent retrospect to build from. Saw these guys in the late 70s then early 80s so can tell you they were a really great live band (tight and on time). Buy this offering. The remastering is worth the Dough.

Throughout his long and winding solo career, guitarist Robin Trower has had to endure countless comparisons to Jimi Hendrix, due to his uncanny ability to channel Hendrix's bluesy/psychedelic, Fender Strat-fueled playing style. Born on March 9, 1945, in Catford, England, Trower spent the early '60s playing guitar in various London based outfits; the most successful one being the R&B group the Paramounts, who specialized mostly in covers, but managed to issue several singles between 1963 and 1965....
