Album Review

Produced by Chuck Leavell, Warren Haynes' first solo album is a refreshing change of pace from his work with the latter-day incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band. Although the feel of this album is undeniably classic rock, with much of Free's bluesy swagger, it is also vaguely reminiscent of '80s rock at times (check out the Mr. Big-esque verse to "Fire in the Kitchen"). The focus on Tales of Ordinary Madness is clearly on Haynes' songwriting chops. For the most part, the songs on this record are tight and concise, focusing on immediate riffs, gritty vocals, and cool arrangements to sell them. This, however, is not to suggest that Haynes has stopped tearing it up with his guitar, and he amply demonstrates why he is one of the most lauded straight-ahead rock lead guitarists of the '90s. The various bands that back up Haynes are all quite good, and notables Bernie Worrell and producer Leavell both make guest appearances on keyboards. Standout tracks include the mid-tempo "Tattoos and Cigarettes," which is a great showcase for Haynes' under appreciated vocal talents. The smoky "Blue Radio" is also notable for the artist's emotive singing. In fact, the most exceptional thing about Tales of Ordinary Madness is his vocal performance, the overall impact of which stays with the listener far longer than any particular song or hook. There are some slow moments on this record, but it is great party music, and fans of Haynes' work with the Allman Brothers Band would surely be interested in this recording.

Warren Haynes at his best!

This album shows how great a muscian Warren really is! This is Warren's only solo studio album and a must have, if you are a fan of his work in the Allman Brothers Band and front man of Gov't Mule. All the songs have power guitar riffs you would expect from a man of this calibur on the guitar. But really what sets this album apart from his Gov't Mule work is that, the lyrics are very soulful and fluent and the song writing is excellent. Every song on this album is great,There are some stand-outs. I'll Be the One, has a slow build up with a firey guitar melody in the end. In Blue Radio, Warren sings about the corporate greed in today's music. Broken Promise Land, This song has got one of the greatest guitar riffs I have ever heard and the song writing is by far his best pieces of his work bar none! and the amazing vocals with the guitar solo in the end has a erieee sound! What an excellent song!!! This is one of my favorite albums I own!! I have seen Warren live many times with the Allman Bros, Gov't Mule, and with Phil Lesh and Friends but, never as a solo artist would love to here these songs live because Warren is such a great live musician!!!

Hard Hitting, Diverse and It Rocks

If you want great musicianship with lots of timing changes, funk…hard stuff to play, but sounds so smooth when Warren plays it…then this is the CD for you. Warren Haynes is a beast and this is a must have if you like him.

Warren's first time on his own

I remember picking this up in 93 when I ran across it because he was part of the Allman Bros and the 3 records that had been put out with him were so good I was dying to see how much was Gregg & Dicky and how much this guy was bringing to the table. Well Gregg's sobriety was a huge part but the 89 rebirth of the Allman Brothers was a major success because of Warren Haynes' involvement. Even though Matt & Woody are not a part of this album this could be looked at as a prequel to Gov't Mule. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is you enjoy the current Allmans, the Mule, or basic hard rock.
