iTunes Review

The four founding members of Other Lives originally came together in 2004 as an instrumentals-only project called Kunek. While they’ve added vocals since reforming as Other Lives, they still take a cinematic and orchestral approach to their music. In their sonic universe, cello, violin, bassoon, bass clarinet, and French horn play subtle yet significant roles, intricate drumming and percussion guide the songs along confidently, and guitars and piano provide structural support to the melodies. Jesse Tabish’s plaintive voice fits the gorgeous arrangements and delicate dynamics perfectly to create a palpable feeling of melancholy and mystery. Tracks like “As I Lay My Head Down” and “Tamer Animals” come across as mini-epics unto themselves, “Dust Bowl III” vividly conjures up a sense of place (appropriate to the song the band is based in Oklahoma), and the instrumental “Heading East” closes the album on a dreamy note. Rich and graceful from start to finish, Tamer Animals travels a dramatic arc that makes each song a necessary part of the whole. A powerful, slow-burning piece of work that grows richer with each listen.

One of the Top 5 albums of the year...

So, I played it conservative with the title because there are still around 8 months left in year. "Tamer Animals" is without a doubt one of the best albums I've heard in the past 5 years. Thom Yorke of Radiohead has even blogged about listening to "For 12." If you liked their previous self-titled release in 2009, you'll love to see their incredible progression as artists. If you've never listened to them before, you're in for a treat. "Tamer Animals" is an orchestral-folk album unique in every way that combines elements of Mozart, Sigur Ros, and Woody Guthrie to create hauntingly beautiful soundscapes. "Tamer Animals" is a must have for anyone who loves and appreciates good music...

raw beauty.

All those feelings you've been trying to suppress are going to claw their way out of your subconscious when you listen to this album. It's raw. It's sexy. It's dark. It's somber. It's beautiful. It's a perfect picture of the world... dark, but somehow all the elements blend together to create something beautiful. This is not the happy summer album you're going to want to bump around to; it'll last much longer, and touch you much deeper. You will not regret purchasing this album.

Gave me chills!

I was definatly not expecting to be so impressed but I love the whole album!

American indie pop outfit Other Lives formed as an instrumental project in 2004 under the name Kunek. The group's eponymous debut album was produced and recorded by drummer/engineer Joey Waronker (Walt Mink, Beck, R.E.M.) and released in late 2008....
