Customer Reviews

The formula has expired

After a brilliant debut and a solid followup, Gotan Project has hit a wall. There are a few fresh ideas scattered throughout (the slow shuffle of Tango Square, the engaging horn line in Desilusion, the swanky nightclub groove of De Hombre a Hombre), but much of "Tango 3.0" sounds like a retread. Their electro-tango has endless possibilities...which is exactly why it's so frustrating to hear them stick so closely to one groove and two vocal approaches (women sing, men speak with a megaphone effect).

It's not that it's a bad album...it's just not entirely essential if you have the first two. If you're new to the Gotan party, you'll eat this up...and there will always be music fans who want their artists to stick to one sound. But personally I hope they've gotten all they can out of this formula...I know I have.

Alternative Ocean's 13 soundtrack

After listening to the album twice there's not really one song that stands out. They all have a simliar feel. Unlike past Gotan Project albums that have been filled with passion and made you want to tango, this album is too playful and sounds like amateurs with a basic soundboard. Listen to the La Gloria remix to see what I mean. The accordion was a staple from the last 2 albums and had long, drawn out, soulful notes, like in Queremos Paz, while here they're short and choppy. It doesn't have the feel passion of Mi Confesion or the need to get up and dance tango in Santa Maria. I miss the feeling of dancing with someone that used to accompany listening to their music. This doesn't make me think of Paris or Buenos Aires and the lifestyle that goes along with Tango. The Ocean's movies have used Gotan Project in the past and this album seems like it was made for another movie. It just isn't that good.

not what i was expecting

no comparison to 'lunatico'..

Before they perfected the electronica-meets-tango sound of the Gotan Project, Paris musicians Philippe Cohen Solal and Christoph H. Mueller worked together in the Boys from Brazil and Stereo Action Unlimited as early as 1996. Releasing their music on Solal's Ya Basta label, the two quickly caught the ears of Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, Mr. Scruff, and other electronica tastemakers, while Coca-Cola picked a Boys from Brazil track for a European television commercial. Despite all the success, the duo...
