Album Review

If Flickerstick is best known for its successful stint on the popular television series Bands On the Run, it's a distinction that one suspects keeps people from getting to the heart of the quintet's abilities. With a brief and modestly successful major-label affiliation behind them, these lads are undaunted and deserve to be heard, as evidenced by their capable, airwave-affable second album, Tarantula. Flickerstick does commercial alt-rock as well as anyone, be it the alluring, melodic roar of "Catholic Scars & Chocolate Bars" or the lush, glistening Church-like "When You Were Young." Although the textural, experimental "All We Are Is Gone" is hard to take and the rollicking "Teenage Dope Fiend" nicks the formula of Stone Temple Pilots' "Big Bang Baby," the group wins more than it loses. The sad-Beatles vibe on "Never Enough" comes up a winner, while "The Tourist" is downright awesome, beating sugary rock vets like the Foo Fighters and Cheap Trick at their own game. ~ John D. Flickerstick have outdone themselves again

This album takes aspects from their first, "Welcoming Home the Astronauts," their second, "To Madagascar and Back," and slams them together in an amazing display of rock and roll, soft drifting melodies. The album can be summed up in four songs. Rock and roll. "Teenage Dope Fiend." Contrasting long beautiful ballad that rocks in the end too. "Bleeding." Hopeful powerful song. "The Tourist." Trippy jam rock. "Pistol in my Hand." None of the songs are negligible, those are just my favorites. Check them out.

A Hell of a Follow-Up

As if Flickerstick hadn't done enough for music with Welcoming Home the Astronauts, they had to go and confuse me as to what my favorite album of all time was by releasing Tarantula. A spacier venture than their first release, Tarantula clearly evokes their influences of Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and U2, and adds a touch of Radiohead to the mix to produce a SOLID sophomore, and sadly, final effort.

good album

really cool songs my personal fave is teenage dope fiend

Biography

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Flickerstick's curious road to rock & roll "stardom" began in 1997, in Denton, TX. Aspiring frontman Brandin Lea met guitarist Cory Kreig, and with the help of Brandin's brother Fletcher, guitarist Rex Ewing, and area drummer Dominic Weir, Flickerstick was born. Mining a familiar, if unremarkable sound somewhere between Brit-pop and modern rock, the band was a hit at parties. Flickerstick's 40-ouncer might have forever been half empty if it weren't for VH1. In 2000 the cable network cast the...
