Album Review

Just about the smartest thing Brian McKnight could do in 2006 is collaborate with Tim & Bob, a veteran do-it-all studio duo who have quietly contributed to many of the best and/or most successful R&B tracks — including Boyz II Men's "Vibin," Sisqó's "Thong Song," and Bobby Valentino's "Slow Down" — of the past 12 years. McKnight does exactly that on Ten, an album that features four Tim & Bob collaborations. Two of the songs rank as high as anything from McKnight's past: "Used to Be My Girl" and "Unhappy Without You," despite reading like bitter pre- and post-breakup laments, carry the nuanced bounce and swagger that held up Valentino's first album, and McKnight is as impassioned as ever. In the hands of most other male vocalists, the lyrics would probably sound like embittered rants from an insufferable jerk. It's spry grown folks' R&B. Apart from these tracks, as well as one collaboration with Brian Cox, McKnight handles all the writing and production. From this portion of the album, "Shoulda Been Lovin' You" is the standout, an elegant throwback to Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" where seduction is swapped out for regret and self-flagellation, both of which come off as real talk rather than pitiful wallowing. With 2005's Gemini and this release — two of his finest albums — McKnight is on something of a roll.

Not Expected!

Let me start by saying I am somewhat biased..I usually love whatever Brian comes out with..but, When I first heard the single "Used To Be My Girl" I was somewhat worried. The song isn't bad, but something didn't sound right. I was soon able to hear the CD early on Rhapsody.com and was shocked at what I heard. "Ten" has flashes of new and old Brian and is very very solid through and through. I believe the album is a good purchase for anyone, and hardcore McKnight fans will come to LOVE this album. I wasn't sure how much I actually liked the album 'til I found myself humming some of the tunes and going back to listen to them more. "Ten" has a little something for everyone, and every mood..From the upbeat and provoking (What's My Name, Find Myself in You, Can't Leave You Alone) to his trademark ballads (A Little Too Late, Again, More and More, I Do). The song Red, White, and Blue (feat Rascal Flatts) isn't too bad either. We met Brian McKnight and he was a very kind and generous person to us, and what makes him even more special is his love for Christ. I respect how at the end of every album he puts a soulful, spiritual song to close it out. "Don't Take Your Love Away" has a funky feel to it and is the cream of the crop. Check this out, if you aren't too sure, listen to the clips..but to get the full affect purchase this CD and enjoy!

Great, but?

First of all, huge McKnight fan! Have every CD. But, I would shy away from buying this from iTunes and I only buy from here. Buy the actual CD instead. I am not sure why iTunes only has 15 of the 18 songs that are actually on the CD? Talk about a rip off? Check out his website and see for yourself. As for the 15 songs, me likey!!!!!!! Too bad I have to buy the CD too.

TEN times better than before

Whew! I was getting nervous for second about this album being released. His last cd Gemini just didn't grab me at all, but this is what I'm talking about! He went back to the lab on this one. Just wish there were more live tracks on the album especially on the slow jams. Overall I'm still very much impressed. Do your thang B!
