iTunes Review

Nirvana opened the door and Pearl Jam walked right in. Eighties nerf-metal had finally run its course and in its place came a tougher, socially conscious breed of band. But where Nirvana represented the thornier aspects of punk rock, Pearl Jam embraced the musical traditions of classic guitar rock. Mike McCready's Hendrix-Clapton influenced solos can be heard squeaking out of the material ("Even Flow"), while Eddie Vedder had the Bono-esque pomp and circumstance that immediately fit the arenas and festivals where the band would soon perform. Though the group's core was formed with the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam hadn't been together long when it recorded this debut album. Yet, Ten is a confident, fully realized collection of songs dealing with a wide range of subjects from school violence ("Jeremy") to difficult family relationships ("Release"). It spawned several huge hits ("Alive," "Even Flow," "Jeremy") and contains the group's live favorite "Black," an emotionally charged brooder that helped define the group as 'spokesmen' for their rapidly dissatisfied Generation X audience.

What a Shame

You know it's funny....you listen to a landmark album like this and then you fast-foward ten years or so and all there is are bands like Nickelback, Hinder and Fall Out Boy. If you know anything about real rock music...you just kind of say to yourself- What happened? Truly a shame.

great album

this is one of the best albums ever. but what the hell is iTunes problem they always take is out of the stores so that it loses all of it's ratings and reviews. they also jacked up the price of a bunch of songs to 1.29.

Great

Great album. One of the best first albums of any band. Even flow, Black, and Alive are my favorite tracks

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Bone to become the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s. After Mother Love Bone's vocalist, Andrew Wood, overdosed on heroin in 1990, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament assembled a new band, bringing in Mike McCready on lead guitar and recording a demo with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron on drums. Thanks to future Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, the demo found its way to a 25-year-old San Diego surfer named Eddie Vedder, who overdubbed...
