Great Creative Choices
It's great to see an artist avoiding the usual fare when it comes to putting together a collection of cover songs. I've always wanted to see bands dig deeper into the catalogs of their greatest inspirations and influences to reveal their personal favorites, and uncover hidden gems like this particular trio of tunes. An excellent choice for James to stretch his melodic muscles. He may be lacking the range of his earlier years, but I personally like his new, throatier, Roger Taylor-esque approach. It's good to hear Petrucci get a little bluesy. I often wish he'd forgo the more technical side of his playing and turn in something more hummable and melodic, and this collection of covers on the new album is the perfect opportunity for him to step out and do just that. (OK, back to shredding!) My compliments, gentlemen, on your continuing sense of playfulness and adventure in a musical world grown too complacent and sterile.
Dream Theater + Sheer Heart Attack = Awesome!
Dream Theater follows up "Stargazer" with a cover medly of 3 songs from Queen's album "Sheer Heart Attack." The first, "Tenement Funster," adds more metal to the original; Petrucci has some strong metal riffs and guitar solos within and Labrie's voice is much heavier than Roger Taylor's was. The second and third songs, "Flick of the Wrist" and "Lily of the valley," were both tailor made for DT; LaBrie's voice follows Freddie Mercury's very well, Rudess' soft piano is nice, and the rest of the band stays with the Queen feel. This weeks cover feels right for DT, and you should by it right away. And then you should go buy the Queen album if you haven't already.
How they do it, I have no clue...
In Stargazer, James sounded about 90% Dio. In this, he sounds at least 85% Freddie. Let's just wait and see next month if he can bring out some Bruce with To Tame a Land =)
