iTunes Review
Though it’s been argued that the Brian Jonestown Massacre are best known for their insane drug intake and onstage fighting as chronicled in the 2004 documentary Dig!, this lengthy retrospective compiles 41 songs that make a better argument for their wonderfully psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll songs and prolific churn-out of recordings. “All Around You” from 1996’s Their Satanic Majesty’s Second Request makes for a perfect intro as the band’s brain, Anton Newcombe, assumes the part of the mad hatter, inviting the listener into the soundtrack of his twisted and dysfunctional tea party where ghosts of the ‘60s Rolling Stones dance with the Velvet Underground alongside Syd Barrett’s madcap collisions of noise, while Newcombe’s own ever-changing psychosis is seated at the head of the table. The band’s first single “Evergreen,” from 1992, reveals that they were initially influenced by Spacemen 3’s guitar drones and UK shoegazing acts. “Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth” sharply lampoons Dandy Warhols’ frontman Courtney Taylor while rocking like the Stooges gone lysergic. “God Is My Girlfriend” is the catchiest of the three bonus tracks.
Customer Reviews
Listen to the Brian Jonestown Massacre!
This is a great starting point if you're interested in the BJM. Calling it a greatest hits album seems weird, since they're not really a singles kind of band. But this is a great collection of some of their best songs... just remember there are plenty more out there ; ) It bums me out that the Brian Jonestown Massacre don't get more recognition. If you enjoy 60's music, psychedelica, or just have a hard time getting into what's popular now'a'days, you may have just found your new favorite band
best cd ever
this album is amazing, how it seems as all the songs conjoin into eachother somehow. when im feeling down i listen to this album and it makes me feel so much happyer.. the guitars are amazing.. strongly recomend listining to this while tripping (;.. very amazing album
Amazing.
How am I the first to write a review on this beautifully crafted album! It's utterly magnificent in quality of music and lyrics. The BJM manage to fuse all their influences into one spectacular work of art. This is a must have for any fan of the Neo-Psychedelic genre...or anyone for that matter.
