Combining elements of swing, ragtime, cabaret, and pop, Songs for a Sinking Ship is playful, melodramatic, sexy, and brimming with style. Despite the vintage touches and traditional songwriting style this is a thoroughly modern album filled with imaginative arrangements using piano, organ, guitar, upright bass, banjo, ukulele, accordion, and horns. Catchy, hook-heavy numbers such as “Movie Loves a Screen,” “Terrible Things,” and the irresistible “Colors” are immediate standouts, along with the wicked lyrical wit of “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” “Wow and Flutter,” and “Stop Wondering.” Of all the impressive parts on display here, and there are many, the real showstopper is Smith’s bewitching voice. Her range and tone are amazing and she’s simply a delight to hear. She can belt it out with authority, croon coyly, or deliver a melodic lovesick ballad with joyous ease. Jaunty and spirited, Songs for a Sinking Ship is a superb sophomore release.
